. birthday at L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon .

Every year, I try to celebrate the boy’s birthday with a bang! 2008 – Sending him a birthday cake from half way across the globe as I was in USA for a semester. 2009 – A staycation at Swissotel, complete with an adrenaline-filled ride on the G-MAX reverse bungy. 2010 – Breakfast with the Orang Utans in the zoo, followed by a dive with the menacing sharks at Underwater World in Sentosa. This year, my initial plans of flying him to Phuket for 24hrs fell through as I had last-minute work commitments. Nonetheless, the night turned out to be memorable when I brought the unsuspecting boyfriend to the world acclaimed L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon at RWS for a gastro-orgasmic experience! 

Known as the world’s most celebrated chef, Joël Robuchon has 22 restaurants across the globe, boasting a remarkable total of 27 Michelin stars – The most of any chef in the world! Unlike the Joël Robuchon Restaurant which is a fine dining place, L’Atelier takes on a more casual setting as it adopts an open kitchen concept where diners will be greeted with a view of the chefs being hard at work. This laid-back atmosphere also aims to encourage a more interactive experience, where the servers get to engage the guests in conversations. We even managed to have a small talk with this Caucasian couple seated beside us – Turns out that they are actors working for some of the attractions at the Universal Studio Singapore! How cool! 

Taking a step into the restaurant, I was in awe of the artistic surroundings. The striking black and red decor compliments the stylish and chic design of the restaurant. Clear bottles of preserved pickles, vegetables and fruits were strategically placed at the kitchen and bar to add a touch of colours and vibrancy thus completing the casual look of L’Atelier (also known as the Artist’s Studio).

This year’s birthday celebration might be a simple affair as compared to the previous years ( Perhaps, an indication that we are getting old?) but it wasn’t one without an unforgettable experience. One that came with a hefty price tag, I must say! The 3 hours long dinner ( A glass of white wine from Alsace and a 10 course degustation menu for the boy; 2 à la carte dishes for yours truly) for 2 costed me a total of about $500! For someone who rather spend the $ on a vacation than a meal, this dinner definitely burn a hole in my pocket and left me much poorer but seeing the boy grinning like a cheshire cat at the end of the night made the money well-spent. Just like a look at the silly smile on the boy’s face!
