.End of 2008.

December 31, 2008 · 4 Comments

Well, it’s gonna be the end of the year once again. And like what I never fail to say each year, “I can’t believe that it’s already the end of the year”. Being out with friends and partying for the past few New Year countdowns, I decided to opt for a quiet one with my family this year. Looking back, 2008 has been nothing but a truly marvelous year … especially when compared to the rather insipid 2007. To quote Amanda, 2008 = “supercalifragilisticexpidalidocious!!!” Just some highlights off my head …

Some positive highlights of 2008:

1) Started the year off fantastically when MK baby asked me to be with his gf and off we had our first kiss right after the countdown at Zouk. Looking back, I didn’t exactly think that we would hit out first year together because I was just fresh out of a previous relationship and was therefore pretty much confused about my new-found feelings for MK. Life shuts 1 door and another opens. There were several mistakes that I committed at the start, but baby was forgiving enough to look past that. Honestly, having him in my life has been such a positive and motivational factor – helps keep me on track to strive towards my goals and desires. The reason why I wake up smiling every single morning. Like every couple, there were definitely moments whereby we argued and disagreed on stuff but on an overall basis, it was an excellent year of creating fond memories. Took our r/s to a higher level as we committed ourselves to having a brood of hamsters as pets too and embarking on travelling journeys together.

” Love is passion, obsession, someone you can’t live without. If you don’t start with that, what are you going to end up with? Fall head over heels. I say find someone you can love like crazy and who’ll love you the same way back. And how do you find him? Forget your head and listen to your heart. I’m not hearing any heart. Run the risk, if you get hurt, you’ll come back. Because, the truth is there is no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love – well, you haven’t lived a life at all. You have to try. Because if you haven’t tried, you haven’t lived.”

- William Parrish -

2) Without a doubt, the chance to head over to UB for an academic semester. Which I really have to THANK MY PARENTS FOR.  :)   :)   One of the best gift of love. It was 4mths of enriching experience – interaction with many nationalities, establishing close friendships with some of them, going on the various excursions that allowed me to explore more of Upstate New York, a different pace of living (sometimes, a bit too slow  and boring for my liking) which gave me ample time to reflect and ponder more on the important stuff that I should devote more time to, than the frivalous stuff that comes and goes so quickly. It’s been a learning journey for me, adopting new perspectives and changing some selves of mine. Some for the better, some for the worse … Gain some and lose some.
To work as a *erm…* cable-gal for a sports production for ESPN, which I eventually found out that I was paid for! My first and probably only paycheck working in USA. To end it all off with an awesome yr-end vacation with my family and baby. Take in the hustle of the city life in Toronto and Manhattan during Christmas season, snow-ski and snow-tub in the mountains and taking all of the glory of the majestic Niagara Falls. Icing on the cake was when I realised I scored 1 A- and 4 As for this semester.  :)  On my way to accomplishing my goal.

3) My short stint as an events planner. It was nothing too fabulous or grand but this chance gave me a glimpse of the operational works behind events/functions. To work everything from the generation of theme concept for the events to sourcing and liasing with sponsors and fashion labels to the advertising & promotions for it. It’s mainly for rather small-scale events in clubs but I truly hope that this experience would pave way for me to work in more established companies in the near future.

4) To volunteer as a dresser for models during the Singapore Fashion Festival 2008. The chance to dress the various models and to witness all the chaos that goes behind the scene just mins before the fashion shows start.

5) To participate in the Great CLEO Swimsuit Shoot with hundreds of other bikini-clad gals. And to top it off, to appear very briefly on a commercial for ”Fashion TV” with Olivia, Juliet, Camy and Lina at Cafe del Mar.

6) Starting this blog, with the main aims of recollecting the memories I have, as well as to keep my family and friends in the loop of what’s happening in my life (if they’re interested). It’s almost like a ”baby” to me. Surprisingly, this blogging experience also brought about new friendships for me.

7) Lastly, a very materialistic highlight but it’s my first so there’s the ego side of me wanting to showcase. :p  It’s said that “Diamonds are a gal’s best friend”. My family’s gift for my 21st Birthday :)   No big rock but I love it. Love it. Picture and editing thanks to sister Amanda :)

.The Last Weekend.

December 8, 2008 · 3 Comments

The last weekend in Buffalo before I depart. To say the “goodbyes” to friends whom Im so thankful for … for helping me create unforgettable memories of my stay here.

Friday Evening
“The Game of Life” – Christmas Edition. Don’t you feel that life can sometimes be seen as a game? “Twists and unexpected turns. Peaks and valleys.” Having to make plenty of decisions in this thing that we call “Life”. This evening, Crosspoint Church presents to us a Christmas edition musical that revolves around the lives of 3 best buddies through the 1940s to today. The decisions that each had to make and what fate has in store for them … An excellent start to a line of jolly festive activities that I had planned for this Christmas.

Group Shot with Mary Lou, her 2 friends, Chantel, You Lin, Jane, Tian Tian & I.

She might be the oldest amongst us all, but that doesn’t mean that she can’t act like a kid. Trust me when I say that there is absolutely NO quiet moment with these girls around lol. That’s Mary Lou trying to be the Lion, with Jane&You Lin acting as the mane and me as the paws. Too abstract eh? haha.

014
The perfect timing. You couldn’t believe our astonishment and surprise as we headed out, only to be greeted by the beautiful sight of falling snow and snowy white ground. Finally, it’s snowing! In fact, I was just talking to a few friends earlier this week on how unusual it is that it hasn’t snow in Buffalo in December. I’ve seen snow once before in the alps in Switzerland but this time round, Im really determined to see and experience it again cz personally, snow sets the mood and spirits for the holidays. A wish for A White Christmas.

The four girls who might (hopfully) get to meet again in the City in December.  :)

Duck! Run! Snowball fight! Always a fun thing to chuck snowballs at unsuspecting friends. :p

035
Take a tumble, fall onto the snow-covered ground. Wave your arms and legs and there you have it, a “Snow Angel”. Having read many western stories, it had thus always been a childhood dream of mine to create a snow angel. Now, all that Im left to do on my “must-do” list is to build a snowman.

“The game of life, we are all players.” First of all, I thank Anita for introducing me to the “American Friendship Partner” program, which brought me to cross paths with Mary Lou and many other international friends (Esp Chantel & You Lin. Darn, are both gals funny or what?! ). My only regret is that we didn’t get the chance to meet (due to conflicting schedules) till about 3wks back. Missed out on all those sessions of sharing & laughter but oh well, at least we got to meet. No prizes for guessing who will replace me in the next semester :P    It’s someone whom I once said that I can never get rid of lol. :p  (T.T)

Sunday

Well, not exactly a fan of waking up to the freezing temperature but definitely to the wintry snowy sights.

Went over to Sarah’s boyfriend, Zach’s house. I think Im destined to decorate trees and so for the 2nd time, the few of us decorated the tree with ornaments and candy canes. Can’t help but to go “Awww” when Sarah showed me a scrapbook she and Zach did together for their 2nd anniversary (they are in their 4th yr now!) … a book containing pictures, love letters, tickets, dried rose petals, etc … Sweet! I got to learn how to bake peanut butter cookies too but trust me, you wldnt want to know what goes into making those cookies. Let’s just say, nothing healthy.. all sinful. But that’s what that makes it so yummy. In between, got to watch the football match between the Buffalo Bills (They lost! :( ) and Miami Dolphins.

Just take a look at how gorgeous and grand the tree looks like!

Ever seen how pretty the houses are during Christmas season in TV shows and films? Well, that’s how it was as we passed by neighbourhoods with rows of houses decked in bright, sparkling christmas lights and decorations. Life-sized brightly-lit figurines of Santa Claus, reindeers, disney characters, snowmen, fairies, stars, candy canes, and the list goes on & on … Such a breath-taking sight that left me in awe of its splendour. Sure, Christmas has become so commercialised that it encouraged an annual frenzy of crazed consumerism. So much to the extent that nowadays, some complain that many have forgotten about the origins and beginnings of the celebration of Christmas. A free-thinker myself, I personally enjoy basking in the jovial atmosphere that Christmas brings … To anticipate the one holiday that never feels to boost the spirits and moods of many. To take in the sights of all the lightings, decorations and people getting into a mad frenzy over last-min shopping. Having said that however, I am not into the idea of attending club parties (which are increasingly popular) on the eve of Christmas. To me, it’s an occasion that promotes family harmony and so, like how I always celebrate Christmas – i want to keep it traditional by celebrating with the ones I love and cherish.

A few more days left, 3 papers down & 2 more to go. Till the day I bid farewell to Buffalo.

.Thanksgiving.

December 7, 2008 · 2 Comments

* Warning: Visuals Overload *

Finally, an updated entry of my short stay at Massachusetts. Took me such a long time to get this post done. On paper, it’s supposed to be a 5d4n trip but seeing that we took about 10hrs to drive from Buffalo to Hopkinton, MA … you can thus pretty much say that in reality, we only had 3 short days for exploration. Nevertheless, get ready to embark on a short journey away from Buffalo and over to Boston!

The state of Massachusetts is to Universities, just as how the state of New York (Well, although mainly just NYC) is to Fashion and Style. Some of the first few things that come to mind would be Ivy League universities such as “Harvard” and “Massachusetts Institute of Technology”.

Need me say more?

2nd Day : Thanksgiving with the Briners

“Thanksgiving is a time for tradition and sharing.” A holiday that is of utmost importance to many Americans. As such, what’s a better way to celebrate our very first Thanksgiving in the company and home of an American family? Organised by ISI, this Thanksgiving trip gave many international students (like me) the rare opportunity to have a homestay with a family, as well as the chance to see abit of USA outside of just Buffalo.  Like I mentioned previously, it was pure coincidence that Tian Tian and Anita were also assigned to the same host family as me. Seems like I can never ‘get rid’ of those gals lol. We also had Phyllis (the co-ordinator of this trip) and Yan Li, a doctorate student from China here with us too.

You know how they say that it’s always the company and people who makes a difference? I wouldn’t reveal much about the family here cz I don’t think that’s the respectful thing to do. But bottomline, each and every of us agreed that we were so fortunate and blessed to have them as our host family. It felt like a home away from home, felt good. Wanting to get a wider perspective of the different cultures from around the globe, the Briners often  participate in programmes that enable them to host international students from around the globe. Not only that but April also teaches them something new about a foreign country each week – the different aspects, both physically and culturally.

Let me introduce … … The HAPPY FAMILY ! Joe, April, Braelyn, Brooklyn and Blake  :)

578
It’s a huge family that the Briners have. That is if you include their 2 gerbils, 1 hamster and of course their papillon dog, Zara, that everyone loves. Zara adores me, you’ll see why later. She’s so full of energy … always nudging us to play ball with her and she’s speedy at that too. Dashes back within 5 seconds after you throw the ball at her. And we can play rounds with that, she never gets exhausted.

pets
Started off the day with an early morning stroll around the neighbourhood. Think big space, plenty of land, huge houses with large backyards. And some with their own mini-playground and swimming pool too.

I don’t want to say “I told you so…” but see, I told you before that Zara loves me. She can’t resist planting a wet kiss on my lips lol.

Thanksgiving 8-course Buffet-style feast. All dishes cooked from scratch by April. She’s such a gourmet cook, we have mouth-watering and scrumptious meals that could even rival against some well-known restaurants. The typical fare including turkey, green bean casserole, waldorf salad, sweet potatoes, mashed potates, apple and pumpkin pies … you name it, we have it all. Just like a mother, April narrated to us the origins of Thanksgiving. Here’s a summarized version of it. Pilgrims who left England and in search of a new world over in America encountered alot of challenges along the way – harsh weather conditions and the lack of proper food. Many died, leaving only about 50 who survived the first winter. It was the Native Americans (Red Indians) who taught these pilgrims how to plant the various crops – sweet potatoes, beans, corns- and it was thanks to them that the settlers had beaten the odds and survived. A such, this was how Thanksgiving got to come about – a time to show thanks and gratitute to everyone who had sheltered us with love or care along the way.

What’s the next big holiday after Thanksgiving? Let me give you a hint * Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells.” That’s right, it’s Christmas Time. And so, together as a ‘family’ we began assembling the different parts of the tree together. Reminds me of home when my family does it annually. Look, April even sewed Xmas socks for everyone in the household, including a tiny one for Zara!

3rd Day: Cambridge

No one comes to MA and not visit the 2 famous academic establishments. Like a typical tourist, we did the usual tours around both MIT and Harvard. The last I checked, Harvard came in No.1 and MIT, no. 4 in terms of National University rankings.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Welcome to America’s most prestigious univeristy – Harvard University. The 1 univeristy that has educated and nurtured the minds of everyone who subsequently graduated to become successful businessman to U.S. Presidents and Academic Prize award winners. Cracks me up to see so many students purchasing Harvard hoodie and stationeries. In case you’re wondering, NO .. I didn’t buy any of those. I have a UB hoodie though, and Im proud of that :)

.Asian Night.

So, 1 of the requests made by the Briners was for us girls to cook an Asian dish for them. Well, obviously I couldn’t contribute many ideas as cooking is not exactly a forte of mine but thanks to Yan Li and Tian Tian, we finally settled on making delicious wontons for them. I did help out with the filling and rolling, well easy task. Rich in taste and flavour, the wontons got all of us (Well, excluding the kids who found the taste of the Chinese dried mushrooms to be alil too overpowering for them) desiring for more.

358
April made these delicious Thailand spring rolls and the peanut sauce. Reminded me of popiah. And we all devoured, eating it to our hearts’ content.

359

What’s a Christmas tree without its jolly holiday decorations and lightings? Day 1 was to get the tree up and now, it’s time for us to continue decorating it with the many delicate and pretty ornaments that the family has.

4th Day: Boston

Once the most influential city in the United States, Boston  is the historical city in New England. In fact, history records stated that the first Euro-American pioneers arrived and settled at Charlestown, which is a short drive from Boston. Embark on the Freedom Trail that allows you to take in all of America’s Revolution History. The culturally-rich heritage trail is lined with churches, state houses, museums and burying grounds. What that really made me fall in love with this place is the neat fusion of colonial-era architecture buildings and the modern, stylish skyscrappers all in a small city. Parks and hidden corners also provide an oasis away from the hustle of a city, thus making life in Boston seemingly more chilled and easy-going than the populous NYC.

Some sites that we saw along the city streets (4km trail) :

. Massachusetts State House
. Park Street Church
. Old Granary Burying Ground (Lies some of history’s most venerable residents)
. King’s Chapel
. Old South Meeting House (Taxation Protests)
. Old State House (Where the Declaration of Independence was signed)
. Faneuil House and Quincy Market

Quincy Market, which was Boston’s main wholesale food distribution center from the 1825 to the 1960. With the increasing need to catch up with modern times, Quincy undergone through a total revamp and now has indoor retail and food stores. (similar to Bugis) With Christmas being just round the corner, the streets were bustling with Christmas caroling and acrobatics performances that kept the energy levels high.

Christmas Caroling along the streets. Imagine the 20-plus of us gathering and joining in the caroling by clapping and singing along. No doubt about it, we were such attention-grabbers.  Tell me, there’s no escaping from feeling the inevitable Christmas spirits in the air.

This real estate sign happened to catch my eye. It says “It’s what’s UP downtown. Luxury Condominiums” right smack in Boston City. So, I saw this sign out of so many others … does this tells you something? :p

Can never get enough of sleep with these mischievous kids around. Looking at the many pictures and videos that we took, I still can’t believe that I went along with them and acted all so-foolish and silly. I truly enjoyed their company and we basically roared and laughed throughout the whole time. Our laughters were so loud and I guess, interuptive that Joe had to come in to check on us. You can just imagine the priceless looks on both Brooklyn’s and Blake’s  faces when they were suddenly interrupted by his presence.. Stopped dead in their tracks and stared at him. And let’s say, I was embarrassed too! Caught in the act, when I was supposed to be an older sister to them lol.

Home Sweet Home?

The day where tears flowed. I didn’t want to bid farewell to them. Why is it that we had to say our goodbyes just when we start to get to know one another better? It was especially difficult for me to say bye to both Brooklyn and Blake, having bonded with them the most. Little Blake who’s always asking me to partner with him in games, or to sit beside him at the back of the car during rides. And Brooklyn, whom I never fail to give a teddy hug to whenever I see her. Being able to see a glimpse of both Cambridge and Boston was merely was the icing on the cake, a bonus. Needless to say, the highlight of the trip was to be able to live with the Briners and be “part of their family” for a short period of time. The only disappointment was that it was way too short. The Briners’ optimism in life definitely gave me some food for thought and made me reflect on my life. To them, a simple life doesn’t equal to a boring life. They gave me alot of insights into the many different things in life - such as, keeping the flame burning in a marriage ( Joe and April… man, you can feel the chemistry between them even after 15yrs of marriage), raising kids and education (Well, im not ready for that stage in my life yet but it’s good to listen to parents who’ve been through it) , relocation and having to re-adjust to a new city/location, finding time for oneself even when u are constantly surrounded by people, and i guess … cook new dishes (receipes from April!) ? It is probably 1 thing in my short stay here in USA that impacted a great deal on my life. Was trying to schedule a time to meet up with the Briners again but due to conflicting schedules, I guess we’ve just got to keep in contact with both snail and emails .
*I made a promise to Brooklyn and I will keep my word :)

. Happy 11th Month .

December 1, 2008 · 2 Comments

Just a month to go before we reach our first year together. I’ll reflect on the year when 1st Jan comes but for now, the first thing that comes to my mind is how incredible the past months have been for us. Compared to many others, 4mths might just be a really short period of time but for me, having a glimpse into long-distance relationship just affirmed the fact that I want you in my life. It’s not necessarily a need, but it’s a burning desire … a raging yearning to have you for I know that with you around, it makes life more beautiful. Albeit being overseas is fun, thrilling and brings out the more adventurous side of me, there’s however no escaping from times when I felt the blues and became more emotional/anal. Having you at the other end of the line and having to listen to my daily raves/rantings never failed to lift up my spirits and make me break into a smile with your occasionally hilarious and silly facial expressions or jokes.

For the boy, I know that he’s been trying extremely hard … not just for himself but for us and the future. To take on the challenging task of managing not just his daily police force duties but also being a student and weekender bartendar all at the same time. There are so many times whereby I wish I could just be by your side, just to give you a teddy hug or kiss .. to tell you that I am so appreciative of every thing that you had done and that I love you. Nothing expresses a message more than actions.

It’s funny how our lives are still so intertwined despite the distance. To see how we would give each other morning calls – though you have to make like 8 attempts each time just to wake your lazy gf up because we want the first person we hear each day to be that of each other. And how we can continue to ponder and discuss about life for hours during our conversations… Or, how it basically takes us 30mins just to bid farewell to each other. At times, it doesn’t even seem like the time zone (13hrs’ difference) is a major challenge to LDR - with you living the American time zone by chatting with me late into your night at 2-3am and me, living the Sg time zone. My Best Friend, My Lover. :)

13th Dec 2008 – that’s the date that we’ve both been eagerly looking forward to. The holiday that we’ve  been planning for over msn, skype, calls and sms. To revel in the sparkling holiday lights, Christmas festive moods, romanticness of it all…

So till then, Happy 11th Month my love :)
