Our little darlings are the main highlights of our lives… so, they are gonna be the stars of the blog :)

Found a cozy little cafe called ‘Food for Thoughts’ and thought that we would give it a try. Great comfort food at rather reasonable prices and I love the quirky ambiance that it provides too. Certainly a diner that we would return to soon :)

Food for Thought is a cozy little indie diner where you can get have a great time to chill out with friends and pals and yet at the same time, discover simple ways to give back to the local and global community.
“We believe in serving the community” As mentioned on the site, part of the profits go into social causes that they support - such as the School of Thought’s financial aid  scheme for underprivileged students. Basically, the School of Thought aims to provide quality tuition for less privileged students who might not have the financial capabilities.

Headed to Chijmes for “Movie Friday at the Lawn”. For this month, it’s “The Devil Wears Prada” - chick flick but yea, i absolutely love this movie. I’ve always wanted to do the whole open-air concept of watching movies at a lawn … just seems like good old-fashioned romance and different from the usual activity of catching a movie at the threatre. Looking forward to a ‘drive-in’ movie screening, that is if they ever do organise such an event here!

On another note, about the Singapore Fashion Festival!
You can’t imagine the joy that went through me when I realised that I have been given this opportunity to volunteer as a dresser backstage.. been wanting to do this for the past 2 SFF but for the first year- I had work and last year, I was too late in my registrations. Needless to say, better late than never. :)

Unfortunately, there’s strictly no photography allowed in the backstage so no pictures of the beautiful models or the lovely apparels. :(

GRI show (Saturday):
madness! 4 changes of outfit in a fashion show is crazy … that would mean having to dress the model up in a whole new different outfit in just 25-30 seconds. The change of apparels was managable but the insane part would be to un-buckle the previous set of heels and to change into the new ones. At one go, we would have 3-4 other dressers assisting the main dresser during the change of outfits. Chaotic aside, the collection of shoes and bags are simply gorgeous - yes, accessories that all girls would love to have.

Qiu Hao (Sunday):
Qiu Hao is apparently an up-and-coming fashion designer from China and his collection of clothes have since been featured in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and other magazines. A unique set of collection that he has specially designed for SFF- almost everything chiffon and flowy but it’s something different so I suppose not everyone can appreciate his style. This time round, there was only 2 changes of outfit so things were much more relaxed and manageable. Moreover, I have a super friendly model - Zuzanna from Slovakia. She’s real tall though, at 1.83m and once, she wore her 6-inches heels, I looked like a dwarf/midget. Oh yes, all the models from both shows are freakin’ tall and super thin!

To my utter surprise, a few of us got selected as the best dressers of our groups and are thus, asked to do the more important shows such as Triumph, Carlos Miele , Francis Cheong by Cappa Roma and the closing show Calvin Klein. This is totally unexpected for all of us - in fact, we still can’t figure out what we really did that made us deserve to do the most important ones. Nevertheless, Kudos to everyone! :) And yea, one of the best thing the came out of this experience would also be the new friends that we have made… there’s alot of waiting time before each show starts so having great company from these friends certainly serve to enrich this eye-opening exposure for me :)
Unfortunately, I can only volunteer for the Triumph! show which is awesome as well as that is the one that I’ve been wanting to help out in since the start of the festival. I would love to do the CK show - so many volunteers would love to do it too and yet, here I am giving up the chance to do that. Well, what to do? Group project and 21st birthday celebrations take precede. Never mind, there’s more chances come next year SFF. :)

My only souvenier from my stint from SFF thus far: T-shirts!

And I got baby and I tickets to the Francis Cheong’s fashion runway show for friday! :)

Francis Cheong brought to you by Cappa Roma
4th April, 10.30pm
Renowned glamour designer Francis Cheong stages a dramatic late-night champagne party with Singapore’s top celebrities and high society taking to the red carpet. Expect to discover a stunning showcase from a designer who has dressed celebrities the likes of Maggie Cheung and Sandy Lam.

excellent! I hope to be able to volunteer for Friday’s “alldressedup” and Saturday’s “Island Shop” runway fashion shows too .. that’s only if I can complete my com 242 assignment in time which is gonna be a real challenge.

.thoughts.

March 27, 2008 · No Comments

Credits: Juliet’s blog entries written on the 11th and 14th March have inspired me to put together my thoughts and write out this blog entry.

Life is not easy – it all boils down to having excellent time management and keeping a healthy balance amongst our priorities in life. For many university undergraduates, it is inevitable that we feel overwhelmed with the stress of academics. I believe that for most of us out there, school, personal and social life and other commitments (for instance: work, relationships, CCAs) get so hectic that it feels as if we have been phased out of life itself. Every semester, my friends and I would no doubt complain about the never-ending cycle of mundane school life and how we never fail to look forward to the impending holidays. We feel as if our lives have been displaced and that much of our leisure/free time would eventually be spend on group meetings, projects and assignments. Basically, it’s revolving all around school work and more school work or finding related internships/work to build up on our resumes. It’s a common sight to find every undergraduate vying for internships at prestigious workplaces and companies since after all, companies in society these days do not only look out for an individual’s ability to excel in terms of academics and grades but also, one’s achievements outside of school and experiences in life. The more experience that you have in a related field, the higher is your chance of securing that job. Don’t you realized that for some students, they are just doing the degree just because it guarantees a paper qualification and internships just to beautify their resumes and not to lose out to their peers. On another note, some students have also been persuaded by their parents or peers to take up say, a business or science degree rather than an arts degree only because a more specialized degree has been said to be preferred by companies. Yes, we have become slaves to living our life for the future: devoting the bulk of our lives in pursuing such exposure and experiences in order to establish a gratifying portfolio. But I guess that is unavoidable since everyone would want a good career that would assure us of a solid rice bowl and bring in the monetary gains for us.

Talking about priorities in life has led me to thinking about another question: that is, how many of us out there actually have a clear and vivid idea of what we want for our future? I don’t mean just career plans, but say short-term goals for the year. I’m pretty sure the answer is no, in the sense that majority of us are either still pretty clueless or vague about our plans. Or that we just enjoy procrastinating.

I would gladly admit that I’m a huge-time procrastinator – I do have a lot of plans for my future and the short-term goals that I would like to achieve but more often than not, I feel that procrastination gets the better of me. In the end, it’s either due to my own laziness that some things don’t get done (like my aim of getting a driving license by year end and scuba diving license by 2007 … none is done yet!) or just unfortunate luck (getting a job at Awfully Chocolate but due to the clash of training schedules, I decided to forgo it but that’s okay because now, it would mean more time spend with baby over weekends. Haha). And I do admit in following the crowd at times too – take for example, obtaining a driving license. Seriously, Im only considering taking a license only because most of my friends already have theirs or that everyone else is telling me that it’s good to get one. Yea, talk about the influence of peer pressure. But, getting it is not something that I desire for and if I finally do so, it would be more for the sake of getting it.

That’s why I admire some of my friends for knowing exactly what they want in life and putting their hearts into getting it done. It’s good to aspire for high standards and as Abby and Amanda put it “to exceed expectations” – people who are absolutely brilliant, determined and driven to not only accomplish the goals that they set for themselves but to do it with style. Such aspirations that they have definitely propel them in achieving their aims with much enthusiasm and zeal. My youngest sister, Amanda is also one excellent example. I couldn’t have been more proud of her and her long list of achievements that she accomplished despite her young age … excelling in school, CCA, and holding many leadership positions. Some might call her an over-achiever or an overt perfectionist but admit it, there is no denying that her determination to improve herself and enhance her knowledge is a testament to making dreams turn into reality. Everyone loves to day-dream and talk about big plans but if no effort is being done, then it’s going to be pretty much pointless and useless.

Honestly, I really do look up to some of my friends for the certain stuff that they do: like Cherie – fulfilling her dreams of setting up a blogshop so that she can have a taste of how’s it like managing a business. Or Abby who’s keeping a good balance with excelling in school, being in the student council, giving tuition to aid her own expenses and working in a marketing firm … all while still maintaining her list of distinctions! Sara, my best friend – who’s really dedicated and devoted to Christianity that she intends to work in the missionary field in future. Denise- gosh, I don’t even know where to start with… yes, she’s the first poly graduate to obtain the PSC Scholarship and many other countless of awards. Been a girl who knows what she wants in life since secondary school days and im so glad that things are working out pretty darn fine for her.

To quote Juliet, “your life is what you make out of it … the journey in the end is what that matters, if you have your end in sight.”

.volunteer for Singapore Fashion Festival.

March 26, 2008 · 2 Comments

Headed for the Singapore Fashion Festival briefing at Lasalle-College of Arts.
Ah, just when I thought I finally have the chance to volunteer for something as massive as the SFF, the truth turned out that there are many girls vying for the slots as well so ultimately, it will still be a first-come-first-serve basis. Volunteered for the role of a ‘dresser’ but honestly, I wouldn’t mind being an usher or packer either. Just as long as Im given the rare opportunity to be involved in a fashion runway show, and Im satisfied. Right now, I suppose I just got to rely on my lucky stars and luck. huh, luck - something that’s so unpredictable and over-rated.

On another note, there’s such a wide array of subjects that I can take when I head over to UB that Im so spoilt for choices lol. Should I consider taking 5 modules (3 communications, 1 humanities and 1 social science) for Fall semester so that when I return for the last semester, Im only left with 1 biz-marketing module? Which I know, sounds quite dumb.  But Im pretty sure that with the extra time at hand, Im bound to find other more meaningful stuff to do - perhaps, work? volunteer? pursue interest and hobbies that i’ve been contemplating to take but somehow, being a procrastinator brings out the lazy side of me?

My current choices :

Public Relations
Promotional Writing
Communications Graphics
Myths and Religion Ancient World (about the Greek and Roman mythology!)
Social Psychology

.different types of friends.

March 24, 2008 · No Comments

The French novelist Anais Nin once remarked “I cannot concentrate all my friendship on any single one of my friends because no one is complete enough in himself.” Everyone knows that having just 1 best friend is never enough. Each individual has so many different needs in his/her life and as such, it would be almost impossible for one person to accomodate and cater to the varying needs. An article I came across quite awhile ago mentioned that there are 5 fundamental types of best friends that everyone would have: Adviser, Critic, Cheerleader, Fashion Stylish and finally, the Party-goer.

Adviser:
The one whom you always turn to in times of need or when you need a listening ear. A confidante, listener and adviser- you know that you can trust in her to give you advice when you hit a rough spot in your life. The loyal companion since he/she would most probably see you through the toughest periods of our life thus far and needless to say, have been there for you. I suppose this category of friends are the ones who are the most essential of all friends imaginable. They know you as a person and inside out. You know that they will love you no matter what.

Cheerleader:
On most occasions, the one who has a great sense of humour and who will inevitably perks you up and bring a smile to your face. Feeling sad but wanting to inject some positivity back in your life? Well, the cheerleader spirit in that particular friend is definitely what you are looking for, in order to capture the silly yet fun moments.

Critic:
Who can tell you that what you are wearing isn’t exactly flattering for you figure? Or that you have put on too much weight? Indeed, the critics are the ones who frankly jolt us back to reality from time to time. She or He would not be afraid to give you criticism - perhaps, the one who keeps you down-to-earth and grounded. Most people wants to be Mr or Miss NICE, and most would sugar-coat the truth in order not to hurt you in one way or another. People very often prefer to listen to the nice stuff that they would rather hear and obmit those negative feedbacks that they get… but your friends who belong to the Critic group would not think twice about criticising you if the situation deems for it(but of course, in a tactful manner). Afterall, it’s through criticism and feedbacks that we learn to mature and nurture.

Fashion Stylist:
Very obviously, she/he gives you the tips to becoming the hottest person with the fab outfit in town. You turn to her for fashion ideas when you feel that you are stuck in the rut in this aspect … and wanting to create more of a lasting impression through your appearance and dressing. This might not be exactly necessary as some of us prefer to dress according to our own style or read up on fashion-oriented magazines and websites for ideas on accessorizing our outfit or creating our style. And then again, there are many people out there would think fashion is just being frivolous and flamboyant and that there’s so much more other important priorities in life that take precede over fashion and style.

Party-lover:
Always loving parties, she/he will be the one you turn to when you need a little partying in your life. Product launches in glitzy clubs? Promotions and Events? Yes, you got it all covered with this party-goer friend of yours. Your party-loving friend is your right-hand man when it comes to bringing the house down with your wild dancing and antics as well as, downing ridiculous amounts of alcohol. It’s all about partying and fun, baby!

Every single of our friends has certainly played an impact on our lives to some extent and have a purpose that they serve in an individual’s life. Sure, in my opinion- there are many other more classifications outside of the ones given here regarding the different types of friendship. In fact, one friend could also fulfil a couple of roles - for instance, she could be both your adviser and critic or heck, all 5 types to some extent. As I try to figure out which category of friend i fall under, I realised that I do likewise played all 5 roles at various points of my life to different groups of friends. However, the status of friendship changes over-time so even if we are an ‘adviser’ or ‘cheerleader’ to a particular friend at this point of time, that particular category might not be guaranteed given the evolution of friendships. We just got to remember that it’s the growth of the quality of friendship and those memorable moments that we share that hold so closely to our hearts.
So, what type of friend are you?

A new addition to our growing family. An utterly chubby and fat silver grey syrian girl.
Haven’t exactly thought of the ideal name for her yet but she’s being nicknamed “Fat Girl” by me so far. Trust me, she’s heavy and she eats hell ALOT!!!

ham9.jpgham11.jpg
ham12.jpgham10.jpg

Not forgetting about our lil’ Dustball :) He’s grown much larger now too, plus his fur is getting longer too. Don’t ask me who I prefer more for i love them both so dearly. MK’s biased though, he prefers Fat Girl cz she’s more tame and easier to handle due to her larger size too. Dustball, on the other hand, is always wanting to be on the move lol, behaving exactly just like a little boy. and yes, he gets horny and hyper-active too whenever he senses Fat girl’s presence. gosh!

ham5.jpgham6.jpg
ham7.jpgham8.jpg

Picture of the day! Both Fat Girl and Dustball getting acquainted with each other! I really love this shot, it’s like a mirror reflection of them both. And, they have this really innocent facial expression.

ham13.jpg

ps: pardon the rusty cages, we are getting tanks for them to stay in :)

I think having hamsters in our lives have made us turn to become more domesticated, wanting to stay at home more often than heading out. Spending precious time with our little darlings. Or perhaps, it’s just due to our pure laziness. Needless to say, we still managed to head out to the nearby Tong Shui Cafe for our dinner. Such colourful and bright interior designs, makes us both happy.

fri1.jpgfri2.jpg
fri3.jpgfri4.jpg
fri5.jpgfri6.jpg
fri7.jpgfri8.jpg

And then hopping over to Liquid Kitchen for drinks. It’s been quite awhile since we both had a short, lovely drinking session together. Well, I don’t quite enjoy alcoholic drinks to begin with.. really poor tolerance for alcohol. So different from baby. I love “Sex On the Beach” - a sweet and yummy cocktail, just what i like.

fri9.jpgfri10.jpg
fri11.jpgfri12.jpg

Saturday! It’s an orgasmic japanese food session for us both. Made reservations for two for at Ikoi for ala carte buffet, and u simply cannot imagine the amount of food we ate over 2hours. It was sheer madness. Picture Galore of food. Some highlights include 5 servings of assorted sashimi(ordered 3 times), 8 ebi tempura(prawns) amongst other mixed tempura dishes, sushi, soba, curry rice … etc etc. Our best food investment to-date as it costs only $33++/each  for free flow of food.
Alright, I never thought I would say this but honestly, baby and i are scared of sashimi and jap food now… haha, overdose of it lol. So, we would be avoiding jap food at all costs in the meantime.

Am finally done with the uploading of the pictures of food and more food. I guess, baby and I would be astonished to see how much food we can gobble up in just 1 session when we look back at these pictures together. So, what’s the next best thing to do after a hearty meal? Go have a stroll together and so, we decided to check out MoST. :)
That is: Museum of Shanghai Toys. Admission only $3 for students(with local bank cards).

A little info about MoST- the first museum in the world to exhibit vintage oriental toys, and it boasts an extensive collection of toys that originated from Shanghai China from the period of 1910s to 1970s.

sat16.jpgsat171.jpg

Can’t really appreciate the collection for it’s not our generation of toys but nevertheless, it’s still amazing to see how someone can be so devoted to collecting ancient toys and making this museum “a testament to his lifelong labour of love” for oriental toys. Though a really small museum(basically just a storey of toy collection) but it’s feels quaint and radiates a homely feeling. Im kinda freaked out by the dolls though (apparently, the first few series of dolls made in China were mainly used for burial purposes). I can just imagine them coming alive at night and giving me nightmares!

I don’t even know where to begin…
Im So In Love With YOU.
I feel like im in an utter state of utopia, where everything seems beautiful and perfect.
It’s hard to explain. Even through disagreements, there’s still the burning desire to want to work things work properly so that at the end of the day, it only serves to bring us closer - what we want is a relationship that goes through stormy times and  still endures.
Even yesterday, when baby was packing to leave for home, I couldn’t help but to tear a little. Parting is difficult, even though it’s just a week before I get to see him again. Nothing beats spending time with him. When someone is such an integral part of your life, it just becomes hard to bid farewell.

.it’s mid-week.

March 19, 2008 · No Comments

This is the reason why despite the unsatisfactory pay, im still enjoying my days at the tuition centre!
The company of these sometimes overly-naughty and mischievous kids …
It can be a major headache at times, but honestly without them and the insane amount of noise they make, life at the centre would pretty much be rather mundane. I understand that some pple do not like kids but in general, i love most of them. never fails to bring a smile to my face :)

And got to meet up with Sok Yin after tuition, at our usual spot - Toa Payoh. Here’s the romantic place that never fails to attract us whenever we are in the tpy heartland area. Call it our “romantic place aka secret garden hideout” where we would have our 3-4 hours long conversation together. Have been telling her that I would bring my bf to check out this place but alas, that romantic place belongs to just sok and me thus far.

zz41.jpg

Today’s meet-up was real special. While Sok and I have already been the best of friends for a good 8 years thus far and been through quite a bit of adventure together … today however just brought about a whole new level to our friendship and thus, fostered a closer bond between us both :) you know that we will both always be there for each other, my dear.

zz52.jpgzz65.jpg

Finally. The person-in-charge of the Singapore Fashion Festival emailed us regarding the briefing date so that means, there’s a possibility that I could be volunteering for SFF afterall :)  really looking forward to it, even though it could mean a struggle to get more things done within the limited time frame. School, MK baby, SFF, friends, tuition and hamsters- it’s okay, I can do it :) And everyone’s turning 21 soon … 3 21st birthday parties in the weekend of 5th and 6th April and a following 21st birthday celebration for Sok on the 12th. Ahh, got to spend $$$. and then, baby’s leaving for OBS on the 8th. till 23rd April!!! gonna miss him like crazy, im pretty sure of that :(
